Just 2 Days Old When She Arrived At the Shelter This Kitten Defies All Odds

When a kitten is first born, they can quite easily fit into the palm of your hand.

Most newborn kittens weigh less than a pound when they’re born and don’t even open their eyes for the first few weeks after they’re born.

Although small kittens are spunky, they don’t usually get that way until at least 6 weeks after being born.

Bijou was brought in to a shelter when she was just 48 hours old. She was brought in four brothers and was clearly the smallest of the bunch. Weighing in at just 2.6 ounces!

Bijou’s story isn’t by any means a sad one. She may be tiny, but she’s a fighter!

When Bijou ended up at the National Kitten Coalition, she was fostered by Susan Spaulding, who specializes in fostering neonatal orphaned and special-needs kittens, along with a puppy every now and then.

Sadly, though, the litter was in such poor condition when they arrived that one of her brothers didn’t make it. But the rest of them have stabilized and are progressing normally.

Bijou’s brothers got bigger and bigger while she just stopped growing at around 4 ounces. Eventually, though, her weight began to go up again.

It appears that Bijou will always be a petite micro-kitten, but it does go to show that even the most dire situations can be turned around.

Just like she did with Bijou, Susan is also caring for a little 2-day-old puppy, Gabriel, who was born with some congenital issues.
