Hospital Transforms Wheelchairs And Puts Smile To Children

Patients in the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Utah are excited every year, not because they will be discharged from the facility, but for another reason worth emulating! Every November, the hospital conducts a Wheelchair Costume Clinic program to help the patients celebrate the Halloween. It aims to provide a total wheelchair transformation for the selected 20 patients. Yes, you read it right. Every child can ultimately tell what kind of change they want for their wheelchairs. Of course, this is not an easy job, but the hospital is determined to put smiles on their patients’ faces.

Staffs and volunteers used a variety of materials to work on the patient’s imagination. Out of PVC pipes, paint, construction, and other indigenous materials, they were able to come up with fantastic wheelchairs that everybody would want to ride.

Matt Lowell, director of the hospital’s mobility program, said that customizing wheelchairs is one of their most challenging tasks each year. However, all the efforts and sacrifices are paid off once they see how all the children happily ride their beautified wheelchairs.

There are different wheelchair transformations every year, and this year, the children wanted to level up.

One boy wished for a closet wheelchair as shown in the Monsters, Inc. movie. Of course, it was redecorated. Another boy requested for a Superman-themed wheelchair, and as he rides on it, his smile tells how happy he really was. While another wheelchair turned into an amazing food truck costume, and just another turn and you’ll see a Star Wars-inspired wheelchair.

There are different designs exhibited during the program, and all of them did not fail to instill genuine happiness to the patients.
